Coffeeshops as 2nd places?

prep
Around the world we all started hanging more in cafes. But maybe that's not going to last. Have you tried to sit in a cafe recently? You can't there are hardly any seats and, certainly, no table space left!

An interesting article on PSFK.com that asks the question... Is The Bedouin Worker Killing The Third Place?

I haven't really experienced the encroaching of work into the third places I spend time in... but can imagine it happening soon. My co-conspirators in the website thing I have been working on regularly meet in coffee shops... and I take my moleskines with me when I grab some time away from the desk.

I think one possible solution for this... is co-working. Places where you have the best of both worlds (2nd & 3rd places).

Food for thought... check out the article.

I don't think coffeeshop working will take off here until the shops make wi-fi free. It's way too expensive to work there if you have to pay £5 for an hour online, especially when you know it only costs £15-£30 a month for broadband with some serious download speed.

Even then, for most people coffeeshops will be 3rd places mixing a bit of work with a bit of social life.

Besides, the tables are way too small to get a couple of laptops and lattes on!

In the states, most locally owned coffee shops/cafes offer free wifi over the mega ubiquitous places like Starbucks. Wifi is something that should be free everywhere, imho! Although, i give kudos to the American chain, Panera Bread, for offering FREE wifi at all of it's locations. It asks customers to limit their time during peak hours. Fair enough! i don't see the cafes here overcrowded too badly. People here love working on their laptops out and about. EP
