Seven questions with ... Pascal Normand aka 18 Seconds

Lately I haven't been posting as often as I used to due to a combination of busyness (work + life + running weareallghosts) and a need to recharge the old batteries. I guess I've been looking for inspiration to write.

The thing is with inspiration ... sometimes you have to stop looking and let it find you! Case in point is the music of  Pascal Normand aka 18 Seconds ... a lovely chap from Montreal, Québec, Canada; who plays the most delightful ambient guitar. He got in touch to say 'hi' and to tell me about his music. His EP - "When the fog dissipates" - is a delicious mix of guitar and atmospherics that reminds me, at times, of a less frenetic mid-period era Radiohead. It really grabbed my attention and inspired me to write again.

Normand knows his way around a guitar and this shows, he can go from jingly to fuzzy with ease ... and in doing so, he creates wonderful instrumental tracks that engage the listener. They certainly engaged me.

Anyway ... as is my want, I asked Normand if he'd consider answering a few questions. I am delighted to say he agreed.

Please Note: Normand asked me to say that English isn't his first language. After reading his response I hope you are as ashamed as I am that your 'second language' isn't *that* good!

----------

1) Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Pascal. I am passionate about music. I don’t make a living playing music, but I do it because I love it and it allows me to use my creative side. As long as I can remember, music has always been a big part of my life. I remember when I was a kid, listening to hair metal bands on my yellow Sony walkman and playing air guitar. LOL! Seriously, I don't think you can describe who I am without talking about music. So now, as a hobby, I like to compose and record my own music. It's really a DIY thing where I do everything: I write my music, record it, mix it and publish it. Hopefully, I had some help on my first EP for mastering and to put together the cover.

2) What are you working on at the moment?
Right now, I am working on my second album. I released my first EP last year, and now I can't wait to put some new music out. When I look back, I am not totally happy with my first EP. I mean, I'm really happy I have finally put out some of my music, but there are things I wish I had done differently, or taken further. So now I know I have to make it better than what I've done previously. Since music is a hobby for me, I don’t have the luxury to do it full time. Which mean that I can’t really work on too many project at the same time. So right now, pretty much all the time I have for music goes towards the next album.

3) Who inspires you?
That is a very difficult question, unless I could write over a million words. As a musician, there's no doubt music is a big inspiration. And in many different forms. So there are many different colors in my musical landscape.  I listen to a lot of different stuff, and somehow it all inspire me in one way or another. But I am also inspired by the people in my life, such as my wife. She is a big inspiration for me.

- Name an artist who has inspired you.
It’s hard to name just one. I guess I would say Sigur Rós. Their music is so unique, so beautiful. I would probably have to name Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead as well. He definitely is one of my favorite guitar player, and he really influenced me as a guitarist. And I could go on and on…

- Name place that has inspired you.
I find Montreal to be a really inspiring city, and for many different reasons. First of all, it’s got a very active musical scene. There are a lot of great bands coming from here and being surrounded by so much artist and creative people is definitely inspiring. But aside from that, I like all the different cultures around here. All the colors, the smells, the savors, a true ode to life.

- Name some "thing" that has inspired you.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about “things” that inspire me are the tools that I use to make music: my guitars, my amps, my pedals. I guess I am a bit of a gearhead. LOL! But just having a new piece of musical gear often inspire me to just sit there in my studio and play.

4) What drives you to do what you do?
Pleasure. Pleasure and passion. I don't know exactly what drives me. I just feel that I just could not stop.

5) What values do you wish your creativity to express?
I don’t think there are specific values I want my music to express. However, there are some values like love and justice that are very dear to me. So I guess, somehow, it must reflect a bit in what I create.

6) What role does community play in what you do?
Inspiration. Help. Support. Mutual aid.

7) What is next for what you do?
Music, music, and more music. As I told earlier, I am working on my second album and I’m really excited about it. I would also like to do some new videos, whether it’s a music video for one of my song, or some more loop-based songs like I did in the past. It’s not totally clear right now, but one thing is sure is that in the coming weeks, I’ll be focusing my efforts on my new record.

I'd like to finish by thanking you for reading this, and for your interest in my music. That means a lot to me.

Pascal

Thank you Pascal!!!

Have a wee listen to his EP - "When the fog dissipates" - below and, if you can, give him a couple of bucks ... I want to hear more from him and want to encourage him to keep going, keep creating.

God Only Knows ... from BBC Music

I'm a big fan of BBC's Musical output and am rather taken with this version of the Beach Boys classic "God only knows" featuring, amongst others, the master himself - Brian Wilson (pictured).

What I really appreciate is the short 'making of' that the BBC have put out with this video ... it adds a wee bit more to the video by allowing us a small insight into their production.

Enjoy.

Video: Things that make Vinyl Collectors very happy ...

While not to come over as pretentious ... I do love my vinyl and this short video explains why it makes me happy.

Apart from "meeting someone cute" ... I met someone cute 22 years ago and am still with her, even if she's not a crate-digger.

Enjoy.

Watch this : "Replacements" by Last Harbour

Replacements by Last Harbour from Andrew P Brooks on Vimeo.

I picked up the album from which this track is taken from on Saturday when I took a wee trip round the record shops in Glasgow ... "Your Heart, It Carries The Sound" by Last Harbour is utterly fascinating ... it is dark, brooding and wonderfully baroque in it's expression.

Watch the video ... then have a wee listen to the album below. I picked it up on CD for £3 in Fopp.

Kakimori Stationery Shop

kakimori stationery shop from imageMILL on Vimeo.

I saw this over on THE FOX IS BLACK and totally loved it. I love my paper and would love to visit a shop like this. I love the passion of the owner and particularly love his inclusive approach of working with the artisans in his neighbourhood.

Well worth watching.

Guardians of the Galaxy

I can't express how excited I am to see Guardians of the Galaxy ... I've been a huge fan of the Marvel films and this film, from what I can tell, takes this series ... turns it up to 11.

I hope to catch it with Olly this weekend ... I'll let you know what I think.

*U*P*D*A*T*E*

03/08/2014

After seeing it in the Vue in Hamilton on Saturday, I have to say Guardians of the Galaxy lived up to my rather high expectations. I enjoyed the ride & loved everything about it ... from the characters to the locations ... from the spaceships to the storyline ... even Karen Gillan's character surprised me. In fact, I really cared for all the characters & loved seeing the 'Guardians' develop into a team. I particularly loved Rocket ... the racoon.

One thing, however, puzzles me. It is a funny film ... in that is as much a comedy as it is a sci-fi / superhero flick ... there are some wonderfully comedic moments ... so many it passed Kermode's six laugh test. So my question is this ... how are they going to bring it together with the not-so-funny Avengers?

All in ... I loved it and intend on seeing it again with Dayna & Miriam next week.

Loving ... the artwork of Sheleah Nahshon

As the saying goes:
"When life gives you lemons ... make lemonade."
Friends of my netlabel - weareallghosts - may recognise the name Sheleah Nahshon. She was responsible for the artwork on our latest release from Christopher Alvarado - "Creation by Inertia (waag_rel052)" (see above).

When creating the back cover artwork I managed to spell Nahshon's name wrong and had an early morning panic attack following the release as I sought to rectify my mistake. To be fair, both Nahshon and her partner Simon Walsh were absolute gems about my error.

What came of my mistake was a new found acquaintance in Nahshon. She's a cool lass who creates some really lovely artwork that I wanted to feature on here:

"Knowing"

"Anja"

"Star Seeds"

I find Nahshon's work intriguing ... it has an initial 'wow factor' that stops you in your tracks which is followed by an intricacy that has me gazing in wonder.

Galaxy Cluster Abell 520 (HST-CFHT-CXO Composite)

Galaxy NGC 1512 in Visible Light

When you compare Nahshon's work to some of the photos obtained by the Hubble Telescope then you see where I am coming from.

There is an otherworldly nature to Nahshon's work that just gets me every time.

I hope to work with her again ... and, if I do, I promise to get her name right.

Gilles Peterson on Mr Porter

One of my fave DJs - Gilles Peterson - is featured in a video over on Mr Porter. In the video he talks about his love of vinyl and his record collection.
The "physicality, ownership and artwork" of records inspires the Swiss-French producer - who is fresh from completing his latest album in Brazil - to offer hefty sums for certain gems, such as the £1,000 he's prepared to pay for Mr José Prates' Tam Tam Tam! (and may yet ask Polydor to reissue). As he shows us around his collection, he digs out a Sun Ra sleeve and describes it as a "Matisse". Another - a record made especially for Pope Jean Paul II - "should be in a bank".
Enjoy. Tx

McDonald`s GOL! FIFA World Cup Brasil 2014

My thanks to Johnny Laird for the heads-up to this video ... it is sooooo much fun and while it is an advert it does convey something of the fun and joy of the beautiful game.

I am looking forward to the World Cup and especially I am looking forward to watching the games with a few friends.

How to Tie a Bow Tie with Jesse Tyler Ferguson

I really fancy wearing a bow tie at work (when I *finally* get back to work) and was looking into how to tie them on YouTube.

When Wil Wheaton says this is ...
"the very best How To Tie A Bow Tie video I've seen on the Internet, and I've watched a lot of them"
... I listen.

I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson from "Modern Family" and found this video up to his usual hilarious standard. It also has a message.

Enjoy.

Levi's Commuter videos by Instrument

I found these videos for Levi's Commuter while browsing through the work of Instrument, an independent digital creative agency in Portland, Oregon.

I really like the Levi's Commuter product and found these videos ... which are, in essence, adverts for the product ... utterly fascinating.

They are short, snappy, to-the-point and portray an alternative aspirational lifestyle.

Enjoy

Unusual Spaces from PBS Digital Studios

I am currently off work with my second 'secondary infection' resulting from catching whooping cough in December. Currently my movement is restricted due to narrowed airways and asthma-like symptoms ... which means I've been doing a lot of sitting about.

I hate just sitting about. I hate being unproductive ... and whilst I've been reading and listening to music ... I've also been gorging myself on documentaries, travel shows and cookery programmes.

One documentary series that I've enjoyed is from PBS Digital Studios and is entitled 'Unusual Spaces'. It is only 2 episodes deep ... but it is fab.

The first episode looks at the transformation of the Berlin-Tempelhof Airport in Berlin ...

Berlin-Tempelhof: The Mother of All Airports from PBS Digital Studios on Vimeo.

... and the second looks at the movement to reuse an abandoned rail tunnel in Philadelphia and create a public space similar in concept to the High Line in NYC...

The Abandoned Railway below Philadelphia - UNUSUAL SPACES no. 2 from PBS Digital Studios on Vimeo.

I really love these ideas and hope they become a reality. Berlin and Philadelphia are two places I want to visit with Olly. I've been to Philly and would love to take her there. I've never been to Berlin but do think it looks amazing.

One day.

Loving ... The Vinyl Factory's YouTube channel

I really like the videos The Vinyl Factory produce and thought I'd share a few of my faves ...

First off ... The Vinyl Factory talk to four of the Secret 7" designers who have created sleeves for this Saturday's Record Store Day 2014 edition.

We then have this video about record hunting in Hawaii ... it is a journey into Hawaiian music culture and utterly fascinating.

This look inside the Numero Group is fascinating too ...

... as is this look inside Jack White's Third Man Records.

I suggest you bookmark this link - https://www.youtube.com/user/vfeditions - and get digging.

Epic Rap Battle: Nerd vs Geek + Good Mythical Morning

My eldest daughter turned me onto this video from the chaps behind 'Good Mythical Morning' ... Rhett & Link. I proudly connected with the Geek ... and really, really liked some of the ideas presented.

Now ... if you are not familiar with 'Good Mythical Morning' then can I please recommend you watch this video. It had me hooked on their brand of crazy.

Recommended viewing. Thanks for the heads-up Dayna!
