Bonfire of the brands :: a blog (2)

A while back I posted about a chap who intended to exorcise all the branded stuff from his life and live without brands. He planned to burn all his stuff... and I was a wee bit annoyed that the gear couldn't be given a new, more deserving, home.

Well he went through with it. Check out the movie on his blog :: link

I don't agree with how he went about exorcising his demon... I do commend him for having the guts to do it.

I would encourage people to give away their stuff... if they believe it has an unhealthy hold on them. Give it to people who need the thing for its base element... a tee for warmth instead of as a statement, for example.

I agree. Excellent and fair take on this.

I was actually there. And jolly good show it was to.

The only value was the publicity and interest it aroused. You could hardly move for cameras and press.

There isn't much newsworthyness in 'man gives tee shirt to charityshop'.

Also the setting for the burning was significant given that it was near the City institutions and near the head offices of several multinationals.

Given that it is a one off (so said the man himself) we should give in the benefit of the doubt. There is the inevitable book to follow which could be an interesting read. Although I would recommend the alreasy published No Logo by Naomi Klein or see her website here http://www.nologo.org/.

Will it change anyone attitude or thinking on branded goods or multinationals who knows?

Good try though.

I agree about the benefit the bonfire had as far as publicity goes. If someone somewhere sees a fellow smashing his belongings, and they say "what's that all about?", then the publicity is doing its job. It sometimes takes a strange event to make people start to think.

The rest of us can quietly pass off our unnecessary possessions without letting the right hand know what the left hand is doing. LOL!
